Thought Sandwich Islanders Most Satisfactorily Clothed.
Among the most pronounced eccentricities of the humorist was the matter of his clothes. His favorite wearing appare, even in cold weather, was a white flannel suit. He appeared at the House press gallery in Washington one December day in his clothing, and without waiting for questions about his clothiers, which he knew were sure to come, he said:
"There is no more comfortable costume than the bare skin. The most satisfactory clothes I ever saw were those worn by the natives of the Sandwich Islands, when I visited them thirty years ago. If they wore any adornment besides their native costume, it was a pair of specs."
