Proclamation

Whereas, the news of the death of our former fellow citizen, Samuel L. Clemens, "Mark Twain," has brought grief and sorrow to all our people, a great many of whom were his personal friends and who loved and admired him for his worth as a man, a citizen, and an author, and

Whereas, Hannibal is under many obligations to Mark Twain since in his writings he gave our city a national prominence and reputation.

I, therefore, proclaim that all city offices be closed and ask that so far as possible all business be suspended Saturday afternoon during the hours of the obsequies of our illustrious former citizen and friend, Samuel L. Clemens.
